Traditional Martenitsa – Мартеница, hand made by me. These are not ‘brought in’ Asian made string, I actually twist the wool myself!
It’s a labour of love, but the Bulgarian tradition of Martenitsa is a cherished cultural practice that I want to keep going.
It heralds the arrival of spring and symbolizes health and prosperity.
Celebrated annually on March 1st, known as Baba Marta Day.
Bulgarians exchange and wear red and white adornments called Martenitsi, embodying the nation’s rich heritage and communal spirit.

The term “Martenitsa” refers to small ornaments crafted from intertwined red and white threads.
The red thread symbolizes life and passion, while the white represents purity and new beginnings.

This tradition is deeply rooted in ancient pagan rituals.
Where the colors were believed to possess protective qualities against evil spirits and to bring fertility and health.
How and When to Wear Martenitsa
On March 1st, Bulgarians exchange Martenitsi with family and friends, accompanied by wishes for health and happiness.
These adornments come in various forms, including bracelets, brooches, and necklaces, and are typically worn in the following ways:
- Wrist: Tied around the wrist, often on the left hand, close to the heart.
- Clothing: Pinned near the heart or worn as a necklace.
Traditionally, Martenitsi are worn until the first signs of spring are observed.
Such as the sighting of a stork, swallow, or blossoming tree.
Upon witnessing these signs, the Martenitsa is removed and tied to a fruit tree branch, symbolizing the transfer of health and prosperity to the tree, ensuring a fruitful year.
In some regions, people place the Martenitsa under a stone, believing that the creature found near it the next day will predict their health and luck for the coming year.
